Iran to hold state funeral for military commanders and scientists killed in war with Israel

Iran will hold a state funeral in the capital on Saturday for senior military commanders and nuclear scientists killed during the ongoing 12-day conflict with Israel, the official IRNA news agency reported.

According to the report, the ceremony will begin at 8:00 a.m. local time (04:30 GMT) in Tehran and will honor what the agency described as those “martyred during the Zionist entity’s aggression.”

Among those to be commemorated is Major General Hossein Salami, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), who was reportedly killed on the first day of hostilities. A separate funeral service is scheduled for Thursday in central Iran to honor his memory.

The high-profile ceremonies reflect the significant toll the conflict has taken on Iran’s military leadership and scientific community, amid rising regional tensions and intensifying international scrutiny.

Earlier Tuesday, Iran’s parliament approved a controversial bill to suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), citing the agency’s failure to condemn recent attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities. The bill must still be ratified by the Guardian Council before it becomes law.

These developments come against the backdrop of mounting global concern, with China’s Premier warning of “escalating” trade and geopolitical tensions.
