Kuwait welcomes UN resolution on cooperation with GCC

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the State of Kuwait’s warm welcome of the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption—on June 16, 2025—of the resolution entitled “Cooperation between the United Nations and the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf.”

This landmark resolution, the first of its kind, was submitted by Kuwait—currently holding the presidency of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)—through its Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, on behalf of all GCC member states. It was adopted by consensus among UN member states, underscoring the broad support for enhanced collaboration between the UN and regional organizations, reports Al-Jarida daily.

The resolution reflects the depth of historical cooperation between the United Nations and the GCC and is rooted in Article 52 of the UN Charter, which affirms the importance of strengthening partnerships with regional entities to advance the core principles of international peace and security.

In its statement, the Ministry emphasized its aspiration to institutionalize cooperation between the two organizations, including through:

  • Annual high-level strategic meetings between the UN and GCC General Secretariats
  • Joint efforts to enhance institutional capacities in areas such as conflict prevention, mediation, preventive diplomacy, early warning systems, and crisis management
  • Regular consultations to follow up on regional developments and align strategies for addressing emerging security challenges

The State of Kuwait expressed deep pride in presenting this historic resolution on behalf of its GCC partners and reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to advancing multilateral engagement and building robust international partnerships. Kuwait reiterated its dedication to playing a constructive and proactive role in promoting regional and global peace, security, and stability.
