Dr. Al-Awadhi approves pricing for 69 new medications in private sector pharmacies

Minister of Health Dr. Ahmed Al-Awadhi has issued Ministerial Resolution No. 93 of 2025, formally approving the pricing of 69 medications and pharmaceutical products to be dispensed in private sector pharmacies.

The resolution prioritizes both therapeutic safety and quality, while aiming to strike a balance between economic efficiency and high standards of healthcare delivery, according to Al-Rai daily.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Health, said the resolution is grounded in the recommendations of the Drug Pricing Committee and serves as a continuation of Ministerial Resolution No. 74 of 2023. It reflects the Ministry’s ongoing strategy to strengthen regulatory oversight of the pharmaceutical market, maintain affordability for patients, and uphold the efficacy and safety of medical treatments.

The newly approved pricing list spans a wide range of therapeutic categories. These include oncology medications (such as treatments for leukemia), antidiabetic agents, antihypertensives, lipid- and cholesterol-lowering agents, anticoagulants, antidepressants, antiepileptics, antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, asthma therapies, anti-osteoporotic agents, thyroid medications, dermatological preparations, medications for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, anti-obesity drugs, and migraine treatments.

The Ministry emphasized that this resolution is part of a broader initiative to rationalize and reassess medication pricing to enhance cost-effectiveness across the pharmaceutical sector and ensure equitable access to essential medicines.

This follows several key decisions in recent months:

  • In March, prices were approved for 146 medications, pharmaceutical preparations, and nutritional supplements.
  • Last week, Ministerial Resolution No. 92 of 2025 was issued to reduce the price of tirzepatide injections—used for diabetes management and weight control—by 30%.
  • In July 2024, the Ministry reduced prices on over 200 medications.
  • In May 2024, it approved pricing for an additional 228 medications and pharmaceutical products.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring fair pricing, alleviating patients’ financial burdens, and supporting a comprehensive, equitable, and sustainable healthcare system in the State of Kuwait.
