The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is working to resume the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) following the announcement of a ceasefire between India and Pakistan on Saturday.
The high-profile tournament was suspended last week, just a day after the Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals match in Dharamsala was abandoned midway due to air raid alerts in nearby cities, including Jammu and Pathankot.
Most overseas players have since returned to their respective countries. The BCCI has now instructed franchises to regroup their squads at their home venues by Tuesday, with the goal of restarting the tournament by the end of this week, according to Indian media reports.
A final decision on the revised schedule was expected today, following a crucial meeting between the BCCI and key stakeholders. However, it is considered highly unlikely that cities such as Dharamsala, Chandigarh, Delhi, Jaipur, and Mumbai will host any of the remaining fixtures.
Instead, the rest of the tournament is expected to be confined to five venues: Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Lucknow.
On the points table, Gujarat Titans currently lead with 16 points and a strong net run rate (NRR) of 0.793. They are closely followed by Royal Challengers Bengaluru, also on 16 points but with a lower NRR of 0.482.
Punjab Kings remain competitive with 15 points, while Mumbai Indians (14), Delhi Capitals (13), Kolkata Knight Riders (11), and Lucknow Super Giants (10) are still in the hunt for playoff spots.
Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Rajasthan Royals have been eliminated from playoff contention.
BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla confirmed that discussions are ongoing to find a viable solution. “As of now, there is no final decision on the IPL. BCCI officials, including the Secretary and the IPL Chairman, are actively engaging with franchises and other stakeholders. Efforts are being made to resume the tournament as early as possible,” said Shukla.
Speaking to PTI, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said, “In the coming days, we will initiate consultations with franchises, broadcasters, sponsors, and state associations hosting the remaining matches before finalizing a plan for the league’s resumption.
Given the importance of the IPL at this stage, it will also be necessary to secure approval from the Government of India before confirming the restart timeline.”
A total of 16 matches are left to be played in IPL 2025—12 league stage games and 4 playoff fixtures.
