Jaber Hospital achieves breakthrough aortic surgery using advanced stent technology

In a medical first for Kuwait, the advanced Petticoat technique was employed to treat the abdominal aortic dissection following stent placement in the thoracic artery

Dr. Ahmed Amir, Vascular Surgery Consultant at Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital, has announced the successful treatment of a patient suffering from a large aneurysm and arterial dissection using the advanced GORE® TAG® Thoracic Branch Endoprosthesis (TBE) stent.

This state-of-the-art stent allows for the complete preservation of blood flow without requiring additional surgical intervention, representing a significant advancement in vascular care, reports Al-Jarida daily.

According to Dr. Amir, the patient had a complex case involving both thoracic and abdominal aortic dissection, as well as an aneurysm extending to the artery that supplies the left upper limb. Through precise stent placement, blood flow was preserved to vital arteries serving the intestines, kidneys, and liver.

Dr. Amir highlighted the major benefits of this intervention, emphasizing its ability to minimize the risk of aneurysm rupture and prevent potential blockages in critical arteries. Such complications, if untreated, could lead to serious medical outcomes.

He noted that this approach significantly reduces surgical risks, including bleeding and mortality, compared to traditional open surgery. A key feature of the stent is its pre-loaded branch, which removes the need to create additional openings or perform surgical bypasses to maintain blood flow to vital organs.

The procedure also offers a distinct advantage by maintaining uninterrupted blood flow to the artery of the left hand during the entire operation, including during the placement of the branch endoleak. This continuous flow is crucial in ensuring patient safety and optimal outcomes.

The design of the stent significantly lowers the risk of leaks that can occur with other methods, such as manually modified stents or endoleaks, due to its integrated and precise engineering.

In a medical first for Kuwait, the advanced Petticoat technique was employed to treat the abdominal aortic dissection following stent placement in the thoracic artery. The technique delivered exceptional results, fully restoring normal blood flow to the patient’s vital organs.

Dr. Amir explained that this innovation not only enhances the effectiveness of the procedure but also significantly reduces associated risks. The success of this approach positions the technology as a new global standard in vascular surgery, with endorsements from prestigious international bodies such as the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) and the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).

Dr. Amir concluded by stating that this accomplishment is a milestone for Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital, reinforcing its leadership in using branched endografts for aortic treatment in the Middle East.

He acknowledged the Ministry of Health’s dedication to equipping hospitals with the latest technologies, which enable advanced medical care within Kuwait. He also extended his gratitude to the Minister of Health and the Undersecretary for their pivotal support in elevating the hospital’s standards to those of internationally recognized institutions.
