Human rights take center stage at 55th Arab League session in Kuwait

The two-day event will address human rights issues, with the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories being a primary concern, particularly the escalating Israeli occupation in the West Bank.

Despite progress and the Gaza ceasefire, Israels aggression and unprecedented crimes remain a top priority for the Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights in Gaza and occupied Palestinian territories.

The 55th session is expected to adopt the slogan for Arab Human Rights Day 2025, in addition to addressing the topic of “Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights,” with a particular focus on the ethics of AI usage and its impact on human rights.

The League of Arab States announced that the Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights will begin its 55th ordinary session in Kuwait today, chaired by Ambassador Talal Al-Mutairi, with participation from relevant government agencies of member states, Q8-Press reported.

The committee stated in a statement that the two-day session will address human rights issues, with the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories being a primary concern, particularly the escalating Israeli occupation in the West Bank.

It added that, despite the progress made and the welcome surrounding the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, the effects of the occupation’s aggression—along with its unprecedented crimes—remain a top priority for the committee in Gaza and all Palestinian territories under occupation.

The committee explained that discussions will focus on the serious abuses committed by the occupation, including the continued detention of the bodies of martyrs. Talks will also address “the role of Arab institutions and mechanisms in human rights and international humanitarian law in promoting and protecting the rights of citizens subjected to serious violations.”

It emphasized that the committee is committed to protecting the noble human values by safeguarding the basic unit of society, the family, and rejecting any concepts that are foreign to Arab societies.

As per the statement, the 55th session is set to approve the slogan for Arab Human Rights Day in 2025 as well as the theme of the day which is “Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights”, with more emphasis on the ethics of using AI and its effects on people’s rights.

The recommendations issued by the Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights are expected to be submitted to the Council of the League at the ministerial level during its 163rd ordinary session, which will take place at the end of February.
