Kuwait seeks UNESCO’s support for September 11 as anti-terrorism day
Dr. Hassan Al-Ibrahim, Kuwait’s representative on the Executive Council at UNESCO, stressed that resolving major global conflicts is key to addressing the root causes of terrorism, as it can only be eradicated by eliminating these causes.
• Dr. Hassan Al-Ibrahim, Kuwait’s representative on the Executive Council at UNESCO, stressed the need for UNESCO to promote a culture of peace and resist fundamentalist, political, and cultural religious terrorism by emphasizing the principles on which the organization was founded and working to activate them.
In its October 4, 2001 issue, Al-Qabas newspaper reported that Kuwait proposed to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation(UNESCO) that September 11 be designated as the International Day for the Elimination of Terrorism, a day for rejecting violence and promoting a culture of peace.
Dr. Hassan Al-Ibrahim, Kuwait’s representative on the Executive Council at UNESCO, stated in a speech to the council that UNESCO should lead this proposal among all United Nations organizations. This move would encourage the development of a global strategy, including an International Coalition to Combat and Eliminate International Terrorism.
He emphasized that such efforts must be accompanied by international initiatives aimed at resolving the world’s most severe conflicts as a crucial step in addressing the root causes of violence and resisting international terrorism, since terrorism can only be eradicated by removing its causes.
Dr. Al-Ibrahim added that UNESCO’s role in addressing this global issue lies in replacing a culture of violence with a culture of peace. As a cultural, educational, and scientific entity, UNESCO is uniquely positioned to promote this value on a global scale.
He stressed the need for UNESCO to promote a culture of peace and resist fundamentalist, political, and cultural religious terrorism by emphasizing the principles on which the organization was founded and working to activate them.
He also highlighted the importance of protecting democracy, which ensures the rights of minorities to live freely and with dignity, caring for the poor, securing the future of generations, and affirming the social meaning of justice. Additionally, he called for accelerating the eradication of illiteracy, which provides fertile ground for instilling values of violence and a culture of terrorism.
