His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has approved the designs for the new passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport, set to become the world’s largest airport with a final capacity of 260 million passengers.
Sheikh Mohammed instructed the immediate commencement of construction of the terminal at a cost of AED 128 billion as part of the Dubai Aviation Corporation’s strategy.
He affirmed that Al Maktoum International Airport will be the largest in the world, five times the size of the current Dubai International Airport, and that all operations of Dubai International Airport will be transferred to it in the coming years.
He pointed out that the airport will have 400 aircraft gates, five parallel runways, and will use new technologies for the first time in the aviation sector.
He said that Dubai is preparing for a new phase of growth in the global aviation sector and is preparing for a phase in which it will lead the international aviation sector for the next 40 years, pointing out that a complete city will be built for the airport in Dubai South, which will generate demand for housing for one million people and will include the world’s leading companies in the logistics and air transport sector.
He added: “We are building a new project for generations.. We ensure continuous and stable development for our children.. And to make Dubai the world’s airport.. Its port.. Its urban present.. And its new civilizational center.”
The new airport covers an area of 70 square kilometers and has a final capacity of over 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo annually.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Airports Corporation, said that it is planned to transfer all operations to the new airport upon completion of its first phase within the next ten years with a capacity of up to 150 million passengers annually.
In turn, Khalifa Al Zaffin, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects, said that the project will generate demand for housing for one million people, whether living or working in Dubai South (the airport city) which is currently under development and has been operational since 2007.
