Three Kuwaiti women create milestone with US patent success

The Secure Baggage Claim System speeds up airport bag retrieval by storing bags vertically and enabling simultaneous collection with a card scan.

  • The Secure Baggage Claim System will efficiently receive bags at the airport, saving time and effort for travelers

  • The new system enhances safety by mitigating risks associated with lost or stolen bags at airports.

Kuwait University has successfully registered a patent titled “Baggage Storage System” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The initiative was led by Dr. Abdullah Al-Azmi, a faculty member at the College of Engineering and Petroleum in the Department of Electrical Engineering, along with a group of his students: Batoul Abdul Hamid Saleh, Budour Faleh Al-Mutairi, and Fatima Mubarak Muhammad.

Together, they invented a method to efficiently receive bags at the airport, saving time and effort for travelers. The new system also enhances safety by mitigating risks associated with lost or stolen bags at airports.

The Secure Baggage Claim System was designed to facilitate and speed up the process of receiving bags at the airport. The system stores bags in a vertical device to prevent mixing and theft, allowing travelers to collect all luggages simultaneously by scanning a card. This process involves several stages:

  • Loading stage: Bags are moved using an IR Sensor, which senses their presence and moves them until they reach the storage stage.
  • Storage stage: Bags are sorted based on ownership and stored together for the same traveler or family in the same location. This stage utilizes an RFID reader and RFID tags.
  • Baggage delivery: Travelers can retrieve their bags by scanning their card, which directs their bags to the delivery location for collection.

Overall, this system streamlines the baggage claim process while ensuring security and convenience for travelers.

In this regard, Professor Dr. Mishari Al-Harbi, the Acting Director of Kuwait University, said, “These inventions are evidence of the quality of education at Kuwait University and the commitment of the faculty members to enhancing university’s reputation on the international stage.”
