Can innovation curb Kuwait’s cardiometabolic disease burden?

Experts gather to explore solutions

  • With cardiometabolic diseases remaining a major concern, the discussions underscore the importance of strengthening collaboration among healthcare professionals and exploring new approaches to prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Heart disease, diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure remain significant public health challenges in Kuwait and across the Gulf, prompting renewed attention to prevention, early diagnosis and advances in patient care.

Against this backdrop, the Ministry of Health organized the third Kuwaiti Conference on Cardiometabolic Diseases on Saturday, bringing together healthcare professionals and specialists to exchange expertise and explore ways to improve the prevention and management of cardiovascular and metabolic conditions.

Opening the conference, Dr. Khaled Al-Mulla, consultant cardiologist and head of the Sabah Al-Ahmad Heart Center at Amiri Hospital, said the event brought together healthcare professionals, researchers, policymakers and industry leaders united by the goal of improving the prevention and management of heart and metabolic diseases.

Dr Al-Mulla noted that cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, hypertension and other metabolic disorders continue to place a considerable burden on society. Kuwait and the wider Gulf region face particular challenges arising from rapidly changing lifestyles, a growing elderly population and increasing rates of diabetes and obesity, he said.

However, these challenges also create opportunities for innovation, stronger cooperation and leadership in healthcare. The conference is addressing developments across several key areas, including disease prevention, diagnosis, digital health, precision medicine and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care.

Dr Al-Mulla emphasized the importance of building professional relationships, sharing knowledge and experience, and establishing new partnerships to accelerate progress and improve health outcomes across the region.
