48-hour ultimatum if Iran refuses to open key global oil route

US threatens to ‘obliterate’ power plants, warns of strikes if Hormuz stays closed

US President Donald Trump has escalated pressure on Iran, warning that the United States could launch devastating strikes on Iranian power plants if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened within 48 hours.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump issued a stark ultimatum, stating that unless Iran fully reopens the waterway without threats, the US would “hit and obliterate” its power infrastructure, starting with the largest facilities, dw.com reports.

The warning comes amid growing frustration in Washington over Iran’s effective blockade of the strategic strait.

Tehran has threatened to target any vessels passing through the route as part of its response to the ongoing US-Israeli military campaign, bringing most maritime traffic to a near standstill.

The disruption has raised global concerns, as roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply typically passes through the narrow channel, making it one of the most critical energy corridors in the world.

Trump’s latest remarks come just a day after he signaled a possible reduction in US military operations against Iran, highlighting the rapidly shifting dynamics of the escalating conflict.
