5.6-magnitude earthquake jolts Northern Iran and Tajikistan

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck northern Iran early today, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The tremor occurred at a shallow depth of just 3 kilometers, intensifying its potential impact on local communities.

Tajikistan was also hit by a 4.0-magnitude earthquake at a depth of 160 kilometers, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The epicenter was located at latitude 36.87°N and longitude 72.10°E.

Both countries are located in seismically active zones with mountainous terrain, making them especially vulnerable to earthquakes and related natural disasters. These quakes can disrupt vital resources such as hydropower and irrigation systems.

Authorities in both nations are monitoring for aftershocks and assessing potential damage.
