Washington justifies ‘Epic Wrath’ strikes at UN as Iran denounces attack as ‘war crime’

US Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, said Saturday night that the “Epic Wrath” operation launched by the United States targeted specific strategic objectives in Iran “to dismantle nuclear capabilities that threaten allies.”

In his address to the emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the escalation in the Middle East, Waltz added that the military strikes against Iran also aimed to weaken naval capabilities used to destabilize regional waters and “ensure that the Iranian regime will never again threaten the world with a nuclear weapon.”

He referred to US President Donald Trump’s statement that “for decades, the Iranian regime has destabilized the world, killed American soldiers and civilians, threatened regional allies, and endangered the security of international navigation upon which the world depends.”

He accused the Iranian regime of “directing attacks that resulted in the loss of American lives, targeting US ships in the Red Sea, and supporting and arming armed groups that have undermined legitimate governments and destabilized the region.”

The US ambassador considered Iran’s continued development of missile capabilities, coupled with its refusal to abandon its nuclear ambitions despite diplomatic opportunities, “a grave and growing danger.”

In response, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Iravani, stated that the US ambassador was attempting to distort the facts and rely on misleading information “to justify the blatant aggression against my country.”

Iravani added that “these allegations are baseless from a legal, moral, and political point of view and contradict the clear principles of the UN Charter.” He asserted that “this is not merely an act of aggression, but a war crime and a crime against humanity.
