Veteran Indian actor Satish Shah passes away at 74

Veteran Indian actor Satish Shah, celebrated for his memorable comic and character roles in films and television, passed away on Saturday at the age of 74.

Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit confirmed the news to NDTV, stating, “With a heavy heart, I want to say that our friend and a very good actor, Satish Shah, died around 2:30 pm today due to kidney failure.

His health deteriorated while he was at home and he was taken to the hospital immediately, but sadly, he couldn’t survive. His cremation will take place today. It’s a very big loss for the industry. I have worked with him on many projects.”

Pandit added that he received the news while returning from the last rites of adman Piyush Pandey, describing the day as one of profound loss for the entertainment fraternity.

A Distinguished Career in Film and Television

Born on June 25, 1951, in Bombay (now Mumbai), Shah hailed from a Kutchi Gujarati family. He made his film debut in 1978 with Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastaan, and rose to prominence for his role as Municipal Commissioner D’Mello in the cult satire Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983).

Over the course of a career spanning more than four decades, he appeared in over 250 films, including blockbusters such as Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004), and Om Shanti Om (2007).

On television, Shah became a household name with the iconic sitcom Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi (1984), where he showcased his versatility by portraying a different character in each of its 55 episodes.

He later starred in popular series like Filmy Chakkar (1995) and Sarabhai vs Sarabhai (2004), where his portrayal of the witty and lovable Indravadhan Sarabhai earned widespread acclaim. His on-screen chemistry with Ratna Pathak Shah became one of the most beloved pairings in Indian television.

In addition to acting, Shah also contributed to comedy-based reality shows, serving as a judge on Comedy Circus.

Satish Shah’s passing marks the end of an era for Indian comedy and cinema. Known for his impeccable timing, warmth, and effortless humor, he leaves behind a rich legacy that influenced generations of performers and entertained millions of viewers.
