US visa waiver program 2025; key changes, new rules, and how to qualify
The VWP remains one of the most convenient ways to enter the US, but it operates under strict compliance rules. By following the requirements and keeping up to date with changes, travelers can enjoy a smooth and trouble-free entry.

Traveling to the United States without a visa remains a reality for millions under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) — a special agreement between the US and select countries, enabling short-term visa-free entry — which allows citizens from approved countries to visit for up to 90 days for tourism, business, or transit. While the program continues in 2025, several important updates could affect travelers’ plans.
The program now includes 43 nations from Europe, Asia-Pacific, and South America, including the UK, Japan, Germany, South Korea, Australia, Chile, and Qatar.
Although no visa is required, travelers must secure Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) approval before boarding a US-bound flight. ESTA is mandatory but not a visa, and final entry approval rests with border officers.
According to the 2025 Program Updates Qatar has been added and Qataris are now eligible for visa-free US travel; Romania has been removed after review and Bulgaria is dropped and no longer part of the program.
These changes reflect ongoing US security assessments, and travelers are urged to check the official VWP country list before booking.
To qualify, travelers must be a citizen of a VWP-approved country; hold a valid electronic passport; obtain ESTA approval prior to travel; visit must be for tourism, business, or transit only; must have not worked, studied, or traveled to restricted countries within the last five years and must not hold dual nationality with restricted countries.
Those overstaying the 90-day limit even by a single day can get you banned; working or studying without a visa is strictly prohibited; violations can lead to entry denial and future travel restrictions.
Travelers must apply for ESTA at least 72 hours before departure; ensure the passport is valid and electronic; proof of accommodation and return tickets must be presented at border checks; provide accurate, truthful information on ESTA application.
