The conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran entered a more dangerous phase after Washington confirmed the deaths of three American service members amid ongoing military operations against Iran — the first confirmed U.S. fatalities since the confrontation sharply escalated.
The announcement came as Tehran renewed vows to avenge the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, raising fears of further retaliation and a widening regional war.
Israeli forces said they carried out “extensive” strikes deep inside Tehran, targeting strategic military sites, reports dw.com.
According to the Israel Defense Forces, the attacks killed several senior Iranian officials, including the country’s chief of army staff and defense minister — a development expected to further intensify hostilities.
U.S. President Donald Trump described the joint U.S.–Israeli campaign as progressing “ahead of schedule,” claiming that dozens of senior Iranian figures had been killed since the start of the operation.
His remarks came shortly before the Pentagon confirmed American casualties following Iran’s retaliatory strikes.
Netanyahu also confirmed Israel’s responsibility for the strike that killed Khamenei and said military operations against Iranian targets would expand in the coming days.
The escalation has triggered a cycle of retaliatory attacks across the region. Iran has launched missile and drone strikes targeting U.S. bases and regional infrastructure, while U.S. officials said an attempted Iranian missile attack on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln failed to reach its target.
American forces also reported striking and sinking an Iranian vessel earlier in the campaign, though the claim has not been independently verified.
Analysts warn the conflict reflects an increasingly aggressive pattern of targeted killings in international conflicts, raising concerns about weakening adherence to international legal norms and the risk of prolonged instability.
Violence continues across multiple fronts, with Iranian missile strikes causing casualties in Israel and Tehran establishing a provisional leadership structure following Khamenei’s death — a signal that preparations are underway for a potentially extended confrontation.
