US to levy 10% tariffs on European nations amid Greenland row

. . . would increase to 25% by June 1 if no agreement is reached by that date

US President Donald Trump has announced the imposition of a 10% tariff on imports from several European countries, escalating tensions over his stated ambition to acquire control of Greenland.

The tariffs will apply to goods from Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland, and are set to take effect on February 1, according to dw.com

Trump said the measures will remain in place until what he described as a “deal” is reached regarding the “complete and total purchase of Greenland.”

In a further warning, the US president said the tariffs would increase to 25% by June 1 if no agreement is reached by that date.

The announcement marks a sharp escalation in a growing diplomatic dispute between Washington and several European capitals, many of which have firmly rejected any proposal involving the sale or transfer of Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
