US President Donald Trump asserted Saturday night that he is “not ready” to reach an agreement with Iran at this stage, stating that “the terms are not good enough yet.”
In a phone interview with NBC News, Trump said, “Iran wants to make a deal, but any terms agreed upon must be very strong.”
The US president declined to specify the nature of those terms as the US military campaign targeting Iranian military sites continues.
Trump downplayed American concerns about rising fuel prices due to the repercussions of a war with Iran, saying he is working with several countries on a plan to secure the Strait of Hormuz.
He reiterated his warning against targeting Iran’s Kharg Island, saying, “It was completely destroyed, but I avoided the power lines because rebuilding them could take years.”
Regarding the fate of Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, Trump said he does not know if he is still alive, adding, “Mojtaba Khamenei has to do something very wise if he is alive.”
He affirmed that Iran abandoning its nuclear ambitions would be “part of any potential agreement,” emphasizing that Washington would not allow Iran to pose a threat to the Middle East again.
