Union and PAAFR pledge cooperation to lower fish prices and boost market stability

Union committed to serve all fishermen and people of Kuwait, to meet their needs and promote the growth of this vital sector

The Chairman of the Kuwaiti Fishermen’s Union, Abdullah Al-Sarheed, expressed his appreciation for the constructive cooperation demonstrated by the Public Authority for Agriculture and Fish Resources (PAAFR).

He specifically praised the positive reception by the Authority’s Chairman, Salem Al-Hai, and the Director of Licensing, Marzouq Al-Habi, who welcomed the newly elected Board of Directors of the Union. The Union’s delegation was led by Chairman Al-Sarheed and included Vice Chairman Jaber Al-Ali and Secretary Barak Al-Subaie.

In a press statement following the meeting Al-Sarheed underscored the Board’s commitment to implementing a strategic plan aimed at reducing fish prices and enhancing the affordability of seafood for consumers. He described the meeting as both productive and aligned with the Union’s goals of fostering cooperation with the Authority to address sector challenges and to present the Union’s renewed vision for the sustainable development of the fishing industry, reports Al-Rai daily.

Al-Sarheed further noted that the Union is undertaking the management of a significant portion of its designated market stalls and is advancing a future initiative to import fish and offer it for sale at minimal profit margins. This step, he explained, is designed to influence pricing trends and ensure stable access to both local and imported fish at competitive rates.

He added that officials from the Authority expressed support for the Union’s developmental approach and pledged to examine the submitted proposals and work toward resolving issues facing licensed fishermen. Al-Sarheed voiced optimism about the upcoming phase of collaboration between the Union and the Authority, which he believes will help advance shared objectives, particularly in the realm of marine food security.

In conclusion, Al-Sarheed affirmed the Union’s dedication to serving both the national fishing community and the broader public satisfaction.

“We are here to serve all fishermen, and likewise, we are committed to serving the people of Kuwait. It is our duty to ensure the availability of diverse fish species, whether local or imported, to meet public needs. We extend our hand in cooperation to all stakeholders to advance the public interest and promote the growth of this vital sector,” he added.
