UNIFIL busts web of tunnels, seizes cache of arms near Israeli border

Over 200 peacekeepers mobilized in major raid near the Blue Line as disarmament push intensifies after Lebanese Cabinet moves to limit weapons to the State

The French army announced that a unit from its battalion serving in the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has busted a network of tunnels and seized a large arsenal of weapons near the Lebanon-Israel border.

The operation, dubbed “Kemmel 2”, involved over 200 UNIFIL soldiers and was carried out in coordination with the Lebanese army at a site close to the Blue Line.

The French military shared details and images of the mission via its official Facebook page, emphasizing that the action was in line with UN Resolution 1701, which aims to de-escalate tensions and protect civilians.

While the post did not specify the exact date of the operation, Lebanese media reported that it happened on Wednesday, just one day after the Lebanese cabinet approved a historic decision to restrict all weapon possession to the Lebanese state — a move interpreted as the first official step toward disarming Hezbollah before the end of the year.

The French embassy in Beirut also shared the announcement, signaling strong international backing for Lebanon’s efforts to assert state control and uphold peace on its southern border.
