Nisreen Rabian, Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Kuwait, has emphasized the urgent need to protect the dignity and diversity of displaced populations and to reaffirm the right to rebuild lives through protection and assistance.
Speaking at an awareness event organized by UNHCR in Kuwait on Tuesday to mark World Refugee Day, under the theme “Solidarity with Refugees,” Rabian warned that humanitarian efforts are under mounting pressure due to the rising number of displaced individuals and significant cuts in international aid.
“The number of forcibly displaced people has reached an unprecedented 123 million,” she said. “At a time when aid funding is shrinking, millions of lives are at risk. Now more than ever, we must stand in solidarity with refugees, asylum seekers, and internally displaced persons.”
Rabian explained that the event aimed to shed light on the resilience and strength of displaced populations by sharing real-life stories from the field, gathered over years by UNHCR’s humanitarian workers operating in challenging environments. The event also provided a platform for dialogue on how both individuals and organizations can better support humanitarian efforts and promote social responsibility.
She added that cooperation between public and private sectors is essential to building a more inclusive and responsive humanitarian ecosystem.
Michael Jabbour, General Manager of Argana Resorts and Hotels, also spoke at the event, highlighting the company’s partnership with UNHCR and its strong commitment to humanitarian causes.
“This event reflects our pride in standing alongside UNHCR in advocating for those who have lost everything. On World Refugee Day, we honor the resilience and strength of refugees and pledge to continue our support,” Jabbour said.
The event served as a reminder of the critical role that cooperation and awareness play in ensuring that vulnerable communities receive the attention and assistance they deserve, especially amid growing global displacement and funding challenges.
