UNDP highlights Kuwait’s environmental challenge; one-third of the year hit by storms

An estimated two billion tons of sand enter Kuwait’s atmosphere annually, underlining the severity of the threat.

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Kuwait has reiterated its ongoing support for Kuwait’s initiatives to safeguard both people and the environment, in recognition of the International Day for Combating Sand and Dust Storms, observed annually on July 17.

In a statement posted on its official page on the “X” platform, the UNDP renewed its commitment to assisting Kuwait in tackling the intensifying challenge of sand and dust storms.

The organization aims to strengthen the country’s resilience by promoting sustainable, nature-compatible solutions that prioritize human health and environmental preservation, reports Al-Qabas daily.

The UNDP highlighted that Kuwait experiences sand and dust storms for over 33 percent of the year — roughly one-third —leading to serious health risks, environmental damage, economic disruption, and harm to biodiversity. These storms significantly degrade air quality and interfere with daily life.

An estimated two billion tons of sand enter Kuwait’s atmosphere annually, underlining the severity of the threat. In response, national efforts are focused on desertification control, expanding green cover, and managing natural resources efficiently, with the support of both local and international partners.
