UN Rapporteur visits Interior Ministry, praises focus on women’s safety
Reem Al-Salem tours Kuwaiti prisons, police units to assess women’s protection

The UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, Reem Al-Salem, visited the Ministry of Interior to review efforts that are being exerted by Kuwait to protect women and girls from violence.
In a press release, the Ministry of Interior confirmed it hosted Al-Salem as part of Kuwait’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the United Nations and exchanging expertise in the field of human rights.
The visit began with an expanded meeting with senior security officials, where discussions highlighted the ministry’s efforts to combat violence against women, empower women within the security sector, and increase their participation.
Al-Salem then conducted a field tour, which included the Women’s Police Institute, Al-Siddiq police station, the deportation center, and the women’s prison.
During the tour, she reviewed the conditions of female inmates and detainees, rehabilitation and medical services, and procedures in place to safeguard the dignity and rights in line with international standards and conventions.
The visit concluded with a review of the Ministry’s initiatives to strengthen Kuwait’s protection system for women and girls, while reinforcing cooperation with international organizations.
