UAE pledges $550 million to support UN humanitarian appeal for 2026

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan strengthens global relief efforts with major contribution to UN humanitarian response plan

Upon the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the United Arab Emirates has pledged US $550 million in support of the United Nations’ Global Humanitarian Overview (GHO).

The 2026 appeal seeks to mobilize US $33 billion to assist around 135 million people across 23 humanitarian operations worldwide, including refugees and migrants.

The immediate priority of the GHO is to protect the lives of up to 87 million people in urgent need, requiring US $23 billion in funding.

The UAE’s contribution reinforces its longstanding commitment to saving lives, responding to crises, and supporting vulnerable populations through coordinated international humanitarian action.

The pledge also highlights the country’s close cooperation with UN agencies, including the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), and with relief and development organizations operating on the ground.

Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimi, Minister of State for International Cooperation, said the UAE remains dedicated to supporting global humanitarian initiatives.

“This pledge reflects the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and our deep belief in international solidarity. It ensures that aid reaches those most affected in a timely, sustainable, and dignified manner,” she stated.

Tom Fletcher, United Nations Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, welcomed the UAE’s rapid support.

“The UAE’s generous backing sends a powerful signal focused on people who need it most. We must deliver innovative and effective assistance that meets the moment,” he said.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, emphasized the importance of early intervention in fragile health systems.

“The UAE’s support will provide critical humanitarian healthcare to millions,” he added.

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell highlighted the impact of the contribution on children affected by crises, noting that the funding will “save and improve countless lives at a time when needs continue to rise.”

Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, said the UAE’s commitment provides hope for millions of displaced people facing severe funding gaps.

Meanwhile, Cindy McCain, Executive Director of the World Food Program, described the pledge as “a lifeline” that will help deliver urgent food assistance to populations facing acute hunger.

The contribution strengthens the strategic partnership between the UAE and the UN humanitarian system and underscores the country’s leading role in addressing global crises. It aligns with His Highness’s directives to enhance international capacity to protect lives and support stability in regions affected by conflict and disaster.
