UAE introduces new visit visa categories, updates sponsorship rules

Reforms based on extensive studies of global residency trends, stakeholder feedback, and future economic needs -- Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, Director General of the ICP

The United Arab Emirates has announced a series of updates to its visit visa system, adding four new visa categories and revising conditions for several existing permits.

The changes, introduced by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), include new income requirements for residents who wish to sponsor visitors.

Under the updated rules, residents must earn at least Dh4,000 per month to sponsor immediate family members, Dh8,000 for second- and third-degree relatives, and Dh15,000 to host friends, Khaleej Times reports.

The ICP said these measures aim to enhance transparency, attract talent, and support the UAE’s economic diversification goals.

The amendments also introduce six defined visit visa durations, a humanitarian residence permit valid for one year, and provisions allowing foreign widows or divorced women to reside in the UAE without a sponsor, subject to renewal.

In addition, a business exploration visa has been launched, requiring financial solvency, foreign company ownership, or proven professional activity.

Among the new categories are visas for specialists in artificial intelligence, entertainment, events, cruise ships, and leisure vessels. Conditions for truck drivers’ permits have also been eased, allowing single or multiple-entry visas when sponsored by licensed transport firms, provided financial guarantees and health coverage are met.

Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, Director General of the ICP, said the reforms were based on extensive studies of global residency trends, stakeholder feedback, and future economic needs.

He emphasized that the updates will improve quality of life, strengthen trade and transport, support technology-driven sectors, and reinforce the UAE’s regional and international competitiveness.
