The U.S. Treasury Department is reviewing a proposal to issue a one-dollar coin bearing the image of President Donald Trump to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary, officials announced on Friday
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent amplified the announcement by resharing a post from U.S. Treasurer Brandon Peach, who released preliminary design drafts on the social media platform X, reports Al-Rai daily.
One draft features Trump’s portrait on the front, while the reverse shows him raising his fist in front of an American flag alongside the words “Fight, Fight, Fight.” The image references a moment captured after an assassination attempt during Trump’s campaign last year.
Peach wrote that he expects to share additional designs after the current government shutdown ends. A Treasury spokesperson, commenting on the controversy, said the first draft symbolizes “the enduring spirit of our country and our democracy, even in the face of enormous obstacles.”
He also criticized what he described as “the forced shutdown of our government by the radical left.”
The initiative stems from legislation signed by Trump in 2020 during his presidency, which authorized the Treasury to issue commemorative one-dollar coins to mark the country’s 250th anniversary in 2026. The law allows minting during a one-year period beginning January 2026.
However, questions remain about legal hurdles. Current U.S. law generally bars the use of images of living persons on currency, raising uncertainty about whether Trump’s likeness can appear on the coin without congressional approval.
