The United States has announced its decision to withdraw from UNESCO by the end of this year, citing a growing disconnect between the organization’s agenda and U.S. national interests.
In a press statement, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce criticized the United Nations for promoting what she called “divisive social and cultural issues” and focusing on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which she said are at odds with the America First foreign policy.
Bruce confirmed that UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay was formally notified of the decision, and that the withdrawal will take effect on December 31, 2025.
“Our participation in international organizations will now focus clearly and confidently on advancing U.S. interests,” she added.
