Two oil tankers were struck by “unidentified projectiles” in the Strait of Hormuz region, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), in the latest incidents to threaten shipping through the strategic waterway.
The first vessel, which was leaving the strait, reported a small fire and a loss of power following the incident. UKMTO said the fire was extinguished, with no casualties or environmental damage reported, and the tanker was able to continue its voyage.
Hours later, a second crude oil tanker reported being struck by an “unknown projectile” east of Oman. All crew members were reported safe, with no environmental impact reported. Authorities were investigating both incidents, UKMTO said.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a key shipping route for global energy supplies, with a significant share of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas exports passing through the waterway.
