U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will hold a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday at 10:00 a.m., as part of renewed efforts to bring an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, President Trump wrote in capital letters:
“I WILL BE SPEAKING, BY TELEPHONE, TO PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN OF RUSSIA ON MONDAY, AT 10:00 A.M. THE SUBJECTS OF THE CALL WILL BE, STOPPING THE ‘BLOODBATH’ THAT IS KILLING, ON AVERAGE, MORE THAN 5,000 RUSSIAN AND UKRAINIAN SOLDIERS A WEEK, AND TRADE.”
According to DW.COM The president, who has consistently argued that peace in Ukraine will not be possible without direct dialogue with the Kremlin, added that he would also speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, followed by consultations with NATO leaders.
“I hope for a ceasefire to end this very violent war — a war that should never have happened,” Trump stated.
In response, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that logistical preparations for the call are underway.
“A conversation is being prepared,” Peskov told Russian news agencies, acknowledging that both Ukraine and trade-related issues would be on the agenda.
The planned call comes amid renewed diplomatic activity. Trump, who campaigned on ending the war in Ukraine swiftly, is positioning the potential Putin call as a pivotal step toward that goal.
On Saturday (today) , U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a separate telephone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, according to the U.S. State Department. This follows rare direct talks between Russian and Ukrainian negotiators in Istanbul on Friday — the first in over three years.
Secretary Rubio welcomed the recent prisoner exchange agreement reached during the Istanbul meeting and emphasized President Trump’s appeal for an immediate ceasefire, according to a spokesperson.
The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed the call, noting that Minister Lavrov acknowledged the constructive role of the United States in facilitating a resumption of the dialogue.
“Lavrov noted the positive role of the United States in helping Kyiv eventually accept President Putin’s proposal to resume the Istanbul talks,” the ministry stated, adding that both sides had agreed to maintain further contact.
The upcoming Trump-Putin call is being closely watched by global diplomatic circles, given the growing urgency to halt the high casualty rate and revive peace efforts. While it remains unclear what concrete outcomes may emerge, the coordinated high-level contacts — including those involving NATO and Ukraine — suggest a renewed momentum toward negotiation.
Whether these talks signal a meaningful shift in the trajectory of the war remains to be seen. However, Trump’s direct engagement and Russia’s openness to dialogue mark a notable moment in the search for de-escalation and a durable peace.
