U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that a further drop in global energy prices could pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine.
Speaking in an interview with CNBC, Trump stated, “If energy prices go down enough, Putin will stop killing people.” He added that if oil prices fall by another $10 per barrel, Putin “will have no choice because his economy is in tatters.”
Trump’s comments link Russia’s ability to sustain military operations to its dependence on energy revenues — a key source of funding for the Kremlin. As Western nations continue to impose sanctions, Moscow’s economy has faced growing isolation and internal strain.
The remarks come amid ongoing discussions in global markets about oil price fluctuations and their geopolitical implications, particularly in the context of Russia’s continued war in Ukraine.
