Over 100 people were arrested in Los Angeles during a fifth day of protests against immigration raids and federal crackdowns. Arrests included charges of looting, resisting arrest, and vandalism. Protesters also blocked traffic and surrounded buildings where detained activists were held.
Mayor Karen Bass declared a nighttime curfew in a 1-square-mile area of downtown Los Angeles, citing escalating vandalism and looting. She stated the curfew was to “stop bad actors” exploiting the situation and warned of arrests and prosecution for violations, according to dw.com
California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the deployment of federal troops, calling it an “abuse of power” that endangered citizens and democracy. California filed a restraining order to block the deployment, claiming no grounds for a military presence during what he described as civil unrest manageable by local authorities.

The Pentagon estimated that the deployment of 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to Los Angeles will cost $134 million. Troops are scheduled to remain for 60 days, covering travel, food, and housing.
In a related crackdown, ICE agents raided a Nebraska meat plant, arresting 80 workers. The company, Glenn Valley Foods, said it used E-Verify and expressed outrage after being told by federal agents that “the system is broken.”
