Thousands of Indians stranded in Iran, Gulf as conflict disrupts flights, evacuations

Thousands of Indian nationals remain stranded in Iran and several Gulf countries as the escalating Middle East conflict continues to disrupt regional stability and international air travel.

The crisis intensified following joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran that reportedly killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, triggering retaliatory attacks and widespread security concerns across the region, the Times of India reports.

Airport closures, restricted airspace, and widespread flight cancellations have complicated evacuation efforts and left many travelers unable to leave affected areas.

Indian authorities have issued urgent advisories urging citizens in Iran, Israel, and Gulf countries — including the UAE — to exercise extreme caution and closely follow official safety instructions.

According to reports, around 3,000 Indian students are currently stranded in Iran, including nearly 2,000 from Jammu and Kashmir. Approximately 1,100 to 1,200 students remain in areas considered high-risk conflict zones.

Nasir Khuehami, National Convenor of the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association, said a formal appeal has been submitted to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking immediate evacuation measures to ensure the safe return of students.

The rapidly evolving situation has raised growing concerns among families in India, as continued military escalation threatens prolonged disruption across the Middle East.
