The Fake Crab: The Fake Crab Are you trying to boost protein consumption?

Ask Mira: Eating Right to Live Happy & Healthy

Well, eating red meat, chicken, low-fat dairy products, eggs and seafood can be a really good source of high quality proteins, so thumbs up for those who are doing that. Protein shakes are also a good thing to have as long as your protein intake is minimal.

I usually go for seafood as it is the leanest protein choice to have, plus it is high in Omega-3 which is excellent for brain health. And people who suffer from high triglycerides levels surely do the same: Omega-3 is the best natural nutritional remedy for that.

But lately I am seeing a lot of people who are on a high protein diet eating surimi, either in their sushi rolls, in their salad, or just buying it from the supermarket and having it as a late night snack. They are no doubt tempting as they are low in calories and taste good.

But for those people, and all crab lovers, we warned that crab sticks have no crab meat in them and are usually around 20 percent the ground meat paste of other fish—the rest of surimi comprises of artificial processed paste made of salt, sugar, starch and preservatives with no nutritional value at all.

They add it simply because it is cheap, which makes those ‘crab-like’ sticks less expensive and always available. So eat this in moderation, focus on other seafood options, or order the real crab when it is available.

Surimi Ingredients include cheap mashed fish, white eggs, salt, water, sugar, starches, flavorings, preservatives, and spices. Their protein content is nothing to talk about, while real crabs are loaded with zinc, selenium and iron, needed for better health.

If what looks and tastes good is bad for you, then you have plenty of other food options that taste even better, and are healthful. Eat Smart
