The non-resident Swedish Ambassador to Kuwait H.E. Fredrik Florén, based in Riyadh, described the ties between Sweden and Kuwait over the past six decades as ‘historic and distinguished’, marked by mutual trust and friendship.

Speaking at a reception celebrating the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations on Wednesday, the Swedish envoy highlighted steady growth in cooperation since 1965, including a recent Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultations and past collaboration during Kuwait and Sweden’s joint membership on the UN Security Council in 2018.

He pointed to expanding partnerships in technology, energy, artificial intelligence, and life sciences, while noting the Kuwait Towers, designed by Sweden’s Lindstrom firm in 1965, as a lasting symbol of bilateral friendship. Floren also praised Kuwaiti entrepreneurs for strengthening trade and reaffirmed Sweden’s commitment to deepening cooperation across political, economic, and cultural fields.

Ambassador Sadiq Marafi, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for European Affairs, expressed hope for the opening of a Swedish embassy in Kuwait, “just as we have an active Kuwait embassy in Sweden,” emphasizing that the two countries represent a distinguished model of cooperation, particularly in the economic sphere.

He noted that Swedish brands have been a prominent presence in Kuwait for over six decades, spanning automobiles, telecommunications, furniture, and clothing, and that these products are deeply rooted in everyday life.

Ambassador Marafi added that establishing a Swedish embassy would further strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation, complementing the role of the Kuwaiti embassy in Sweden.

Both officials highlighted ongoing initiatives and agreements that continue to develop the relationship across multiple domains. Floren reaffirmed Sweden’s commitment to further collaboration in political, economic, and cultural fields, praising Kuwaiti business leaders for their role in advancing economic ties.

The presence of numerous Swedish companies in Kuwait, combined with lasting cultural and architectural legacies, underscores the enduring friendship and constructive partnership between the two nations.
