Gunman kills four, including NYPD officer, in Midtown Manhattan shooting near NFL, Blackstone offices

A mass shooting Monday evening at a Midtown Manhattan office tower left five people dead, including an off-duty NYPD officer and the suspected gunman. The attack occurred near the corporate offices of the National Football League (NFL) and Blackstone.

“Five innocent people were shot tonight. We lost four souls to another senseless act of gun violence,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said during a press conference.

In total, six people were shot, including the suspect. One civilian remains in critical condition, officials said.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed via X (formerly Twitter) that the shooter had been “neutralized” and the scene was secure.

The shooter was identified as Shane Devon Tamura, a 27-year-old from Las Vegas. He had no notable criminal record but did have a documented history of mental health issues, Commissioner Tisch said. Tamura held a concealed carry permit for a handgun issued in Las Vegas and previously had a private investigator’s license, though it was expired, according to KFOX 14.

Tamura reportedly traveled from Las Vegas through Colorado on July 26 and was last spotted in New Jersey around 4:30 p.m. Monday before entering New York City.

Armed with an M4-style assault rifle, Tamura entered 345 Park Avenue—a high-rise housing major corporations—and opened fire. According to police, he shot multiple victims in the lobby, then took an elevator to the 33rd floor, letting a woman exit unharmed before continuing. There, he shot another victim before turning the gun on himself, dying from a self-inflicted chest wound.

One of the victims was Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old NYPD officer from Bangladesh who was working security at the building while off duty. Islam had served with the NYPD for three and a half years and leaves behind a pregnant wife and two young sons.

“He loved this city,” Mayor Adams said. “Everyone we spoke to described him as a man of faith, a godly person who lived a life of service.”

The Fire Department of New York said emergency crews responded to a 6:30 p.m. call about a shooting inside the office tower. TV footage showed building occupants evacuating with their hands raised as police cleared the area.

The 44-story building at 345 Park Avenue is home to offices for Blackstone, Deutsche Bank, JPMorgan, and the Consulate General of Ireland, among others.

The FBI confirmed it is assisting in the investigation. Deputy Director Dan Bongino posted on X, stating the FBI is “providing support at the active crime scene in Manhattan.”
