Severe dust storms, high winds sweep Kuwait, visibility drops below 1,000 meters

Weather expected to persist through Wednesday, accompanied by intermittent dust storms, wane by Thursday afternoon

Dharar Al-Ali, Director of the Meteorology Department, announced Kuwait has been experiencing strong northwesterly winds since early today, with speeds exceeding 60 km/h, triggering dust storms and drastically reducing horizontal visibility — dropping to below 1,000 meters, and in some open areas, nearing zero visibility.

Speaking to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Al-Ali warned that the active winds are causing sand drifting and accumulating on roads, while sea waves have risen to over six feet, posing risks to beachgoers.

This wind activity is expected to persist through Wednesday, accompanied by intermittent dust storms. However, wind speeds are forecast to decline by Thursday afternoon, as the country remains under the influence of a surface low pressure system tied to a hot and dry air mass.

Al-Ali described the upcoming weather as hot and dusty during the day, with hot to warm nights and a gradual settling of dust. Temperatures are forecast to range from 40–43°C during the day and 27–30°C at night.

He urged caution for citizens and residents, especially those with asthma and allergies, advising the use of protective masks when outdoors. Additionally, he issued warnings for highway users due to poor visibility and for beach visitors due to waves reaching up to 7 feet.
