British scientists have warned that a new, highly contagious Omicron subvariant, named Nimbus (NB1.8.1), could spark a significant COVID-19 wave this summer.
The UK Health Security Agency reports that the proportion of people testing positive has reached its highest level this year, 97% higher than in March.
Virologist Lawrence Young from the University of Warwick noted that as immunity wanes from past infections and older vaccines, more people are now vulnerable. He warned that infections could surge in late June or July, fueled by warmer weather and increased social gatherings.
Laboratory studies suggest Nimbus can infect human cells more efficiently and may better evade immune responses, though there is currently no evidence it causes more severe illness or higher mortality.
The variant has already driven rising cases in China, Singapore, and Hong Kong. In England, 13 cases have been confirmed, though actual numbers are likely underreported due to reduced testing. Globally, Nimbus now accounts for 10.7% of infections, up from 2.5% a month ago, according to the World Health Organization.
Authorities are urging vulnerable individuals to get vaccinated to reduce risks as the virus continues spreading despite hot and humid conditions.
