‘Sarayat’ season begins; sudden, violent storms set to strike without warning
Meteorologist warns of unstable weather across Kuwait
Meteorologist Issa Ramadan has announced the start of the annual “Sarayat” season in Kuwait, which typically begins after April 15 and can extend until May 27 in some years.
This weather phenomenon is considered a defining feature of the transitional period between spring and summer.
Ramadan explained that Sarayat storms are known for their sudden formation and short lifespan, usually lasting between 40 minutes and two hours, reports Al-Qabas daily.
They often develop into cumulonimbus clouds, appearing rapidly during the late afternoon to sunset hours, and occasionally at dawn.
He noted that these storms form locally due to the activity of warm, humid southeasterly winds that rise and collide with cooler air masses, producing large but geographically limited storm clouds.
Ramadan warned that Sarayat storms can be intense, bringing lightning, thunder, heavy rainfall, and strong winds. He stressed that they pose particular risks to sea-goers, especially fishermen, due to their sudden onset and the difficulty in predicting their exact location.
