‘Sabah Al-Ahmad Heart Centre’ saves a 100 year old and 60 year old patient
In a groundbreaking achievement, a medical team at the Sabah Al-Ahmad Heart Center at Amiri Hospital, in coordination with vascular and interventional radiology surgeons at Mubarak Hospital, successfully saved the life of a patient in his 10th decade of life through complex and precise medical interventions.
Importantly, the team at the Sabah Al-Ahmad Heart Center, led by cardiac and Catheter Consultants, Dr. Nader Issa Al-Asousi and Dr. Ahmed Saeed Taha, successfully replaced the patient’s aortic valve using a catheter (TAVI), and installed stents in the left and right coronary arteries.
The team at Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital, including Vascular Surgeon, Dr. Abdullah Al-Fawaz and Interventional Radiology Consultant, Dr. Hussein Jarag, urgently repaired a large abdominal aortic aneurysm (EVAR for AAA) that was on the verge of rupture.
This life-saving procedure, performed without surgery, was carried out simultaneously as the patient, nearly 100 years old, was admitted to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at the Sabah Al-Ahmad Heart Center in critical condition. He suffered from a heart stroke, severe pulmonary infiltration, massive bilateral pleural effusion, and acute respiratory failure.
However, following this medical achievement, the patient’s condition stabilized, and after a period of intensive care, he recovered and was discharged home in a stable condition.
Another achievement
In another achievement by the Sabah Al-Ahmad Heart Center, a medical team led by Cardiac And Catheter Consultants, Dr. Nader Issa Al-Asousi and Dr. Ahmed Saeed Taha successfully saved the life of a patient in his sixth decade of age.
The patient was suffering from severe heart muscle weakness due to a critical blockage in the main left and right coronary arteries, along with severe aortic valve obstruction.
The case had been rejected by cardiac and interventional catheter surgeons at medical centers both inside and outside Kuwait due to the high risk associated with any procedure, with only drug treatment being advised, which proved ineffective.
The patient’s condition had deteriorated over two years, leading to her admission from emergency to intensive cardiac care at the center, suffering from cardiogenic shock, Myocardial Infarction (MI), and severe fluid accumulation (generalized Anasarca).
Furthermore, urgent interventional catheterization was performed, during which four stents were placed in the main left and right coronary arteries with the support of a cardiopulmonary pump (ECMO). Subsequently, the aortic valve was replaced using a catheter (TAVI) by the catheter exchange team.
These procedures resulted in the stabilization of the patient’s condition and a marked improvement in heart muscle contraction efficiency. She was discharged from the hospital in a stable condition and scheduled for periodic follow-ups later.
Patient Procedures (100 year old):
- Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVI)
- Placement of stents in the left and right coronary arteries
- Placement of stents in the left and right coronary arteries
Patient Procedures (60 year old):
- Urgent interventional catheterization
- Placement of 4 stents in the left main coronary artery and the right coronary artery, under the support of the heart-lung machine (ECMO
- Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVI)
