India celebrated its first Republic Day on 26 January 1950. After gaining independence on 15 August 1947, it took three years to draft the Constitution, which was led by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.

The date 26 January was chosen to honor 26 January 1930, when the Indian National Congress declared Purna Swaraj (complete independence) from British rule.

Republic Day reminds us of India’s Constitution, democracy, and progress. It is celebrated to honor the Constitution and the values of justice, equality, and freedom that are guaranteed to every citizen. Since becoming a Republic, India has achieved remarkable progress in science, technology, education, economy, and healthcare.

The main parade takes place at Rajpath (Kartavya Path) in New Delhi. The celebration begins with the President of India unfurling the national flag, followed by a display of patriotism, strength, and discipline by the Indian Armed Forces. All 28 states and 8 union territories of India showcase their traditions and achievements through vibrant cultural performances.

Republic Day fills every Indian citizen with pride and inspires the younger generation to work hard so that India continues to shine as a strong and progressive nation. I feel proud to be an Indian and hope to contribute to my country’s growth in the future.

On Republic Day, people of all religions and communities come together to celebrate this historic day, reinforcing unity, patriotism, and the spirit of shared progress.
