Rare white-tailed sea eagle spotted in Jahra Nature Reserve

Samira Al-Khalifa, head of the environmental photography team at the Kuwaiti Environmental Protection Society and a member of the Society’s Board of Directors, recently documented a rare white-tailed sea eagle in the Jahra Nature Reserve. Belonging to the hawk family, this sighting marks her 12th encounter with the species.

Al-Khalifa noted, “This eagle is one of the rare occurrences in Kuwait.” She described the bird as typically found along seacoasts, and as the largest bird of prey in the region, measuring between 78 and 94 centimeters in length with a wingspan of 178 to 245 centimeters.

Adult white-tailed sea eagles are characterized by pale brown feathers, a distinctive white tapered tail, and a pale head consistent with the rest of their plumage.

They also have a large yellowish beak and broad wings. Juvenile eagles are darker, with scattered white feathers, a dark tail, and similarly dark limbs.

The Society emphasized the importance of preserving safe routes, natural habitats, and environmentally sensitive areas that serve as critical pathways for migratory birds passing through Kuwait.

The Society also commended the efforts of government agencies, civil organizations, volunteer teams, experts, and local birdwatchers who monitor these birds, providing them with food, rest, and protection.

The Society highlighted the significance of public awareness campaigns and media outreach to promote the conservation of both migratory and resident bird species, ensuring their continued survival in Kuwait’s ecosystems.
