Qatar declares full support for Kuwait’s maritime sovereignty
International law takes center stage; Doha reinforces Kuwait’s rights over strategic maritime areas

The State of Qatar has announced its full solidarity with the State of Kuwait, reaffirming its firm support for Kuwait’s sovereignty over its maritime zones and water elevations.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and published by the Qatar News Agency, Qatar confirmed that it is closely following developments related to the lists of coordinates and maps submitted by the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations, which Kuwait considers an infringement on its sovereign maritime areas and fixed water features, including Fasht Al-Qaid and Fasht Al-Aij, reports Al-Rai daily.
Qatar emphasized its clear position supporting Kuwait’s full sovereign rights over its maritime territories and water elevations, stressing the importance of respecting international legal frameworks.
The statement also expressed hope that the principles and rules of international law — particularly those outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea — would be upheld, in line with existing understandings, agreements, and memoranda of cooperation between Kuwait and Iraq.
Qatar’s position comes amid broader Gulf support for Kuwait, as several regional countries have similarly affirmed their backing for Kuwait’s sovereignty and territorial rights.
