Psychiatrists combat rising school psychology challenges in Kuwait

The Ministry of Education is seeking mental health help from the Ministry of Health for school referrals, primarily due to specific psychological disorders and behavioral problems, especially prevalent among 14 to 18-year-olds

  • The number of psychological cases referred from Kuwaiti schools to the Department of Social and Psychological Services’ clinic is steadily increasing.

The Ministry of Education has requested support from the Ministry of Health to bring in psychiatrists from the Kuwait Center for Mental Health to join the ministry. This request comes in response to the rising number of psychological cases being referred from schools to the Department of Social and Psychological Services’ clinic.

Informed sources confirmed to Al-Rai newspaper that the ministry is committed to ensuring the safety of male and female students. They also highlighted the tasks of the hired psychiatrists, with the most crucial being diagnosing and treating emergency medical cases that require specialist care within the clinic.

The sources attributed the request to increase the number of doctors to the nature and specificity of certain psychological disorders and behavioral problems.

These issues may lead to embarrassment during treatment sessions, which can negatively impact the treatment process. Additionally, they mentioned the specific age group of 14 to 18 years as a factor.

The sources noted ongoing cooperation and coordination between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health in providing treatment services for psychological cases from schools to the psychological clinic in the Department of Social and Psychological Services within the Educational Development and Activities Sector.
