Protecting persons from human trafficking is not a choice, it’s a national responsibility: Nasser Al-Sumait

On the occasion of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, observed annually on July 30, Kuwait reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting human dignity and combating all forms of exploitation.

Minister of Justice and Chairman of the Permanent National Committee to Combat Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants, Advisor Nasser Al-Sumait, stressed that protecting individuals from human trafficking is not a choice but a national responsibility—one that demands coordinated action across institutions throughout the year.

In a statement marking the global occasion, Al-Sumait emphasized that Kuwait’s approach is holistic and integrated, anchored in prevention, legislation, care, and guided by transparency and accountability.

He noted that the country is continuously modernizing its tools to confront trafficking crimes, especially in the face of evolving global challenges and the digital landscape.

“The fight against trafficking must evolve with the times,” he stated, highlighting that public awareness is the first line of defense, and that the true measure of success lies in the ability to prevent harm before it occurs. He also underscored the vital role of community partnerships and responsible media in spreading awareness and fostering a culture of vigilance.

Al-Sumait expressed full confidence that Kuwait’s national efforts, aligned with international standards, will lead to a safer environment where human rights are respected without discrimination.

Kuwait established the Permanent National Committee to Combat Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants in 2018. The committee’s vision is to build a society free from trafficking and smuggling, one that is fully aware of the risks of such crimes and actively works to eradicate them.

The United Nations General Assembly designated July 30 as the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons to raise global awareness, amplify the voices of victims, and highlight the need for action to protect their rights.
