U.S. President Donald Trump said late Tuesday that the war with Iran is “very close to over,” noting that the Iranian regime is eager to sign an agreement, amid expectations of a new round of direct negotiations between the two sides in Islamabad in the two coming days.
In remarks to Fox News, Trump added that “I think it’s close to over, yeah. I mean I view it as very close to over.” Trump elaborated that the war could end soon and that it would take Iran 20 years to rebuild from the devastation caused by US and the Israeli occupation strikes.
“And we are not finished. We’ll see what happens. I think they (Iranians) want to make a deal very badly,” he noted. Trump announced Monday imposing a naval blockade on all Iranian ports in the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, a new escalation of the conflict after the United States had agreed last week on a ceasefire.
Meanwhile, US Vice President J.D. Vance said earlier in the day that Washington is working ‘in good faith’ to reach an inclusive agreement with Iran that could end the conflict in the region and prevent Tehran from possessing a nuclear weapon and financing terrorism.
In a speech during a Turning Point USA event in Georgia, Vance added that President Donald Trump wants a comprehensive deal that no American president has offered before. Vance indicated that they are seeking a deal in which Iran does not own a nuclear weapon and does not sponsor terrorism, in exchange for ensuring the integration of the Iranian people into the international community and transforming the country into an economically prosperous state.
