Pope Francis was laid to rest in a simple underground tomb outside the Vatican grounds, in accordance with his wishes.
His funeral service, held earlier this morning, was also simple and understated, reflecting the humility that marked his life. Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re presided over the ceremony, urging the world to honor the late pope by “building bridges, not walls.”
Hundreds of thousands lined the streets of Rome to witness the pope’s coffin as it traveled to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, his final resting place.
During the funeral homily, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re highlighted one of Pope Francis’ most repeated exhortations: “Build bridges, not walls.”
