Earthquake has injured 294 people, displaced over 20,000 and caused significant damage to infrastructure, power lines, bridges, and historic buildings including a century-old church
The death toll from the 6.9 magnitude earthquake that devastated part of the central Philippines late on Tuesday has risen to 72, with 294 people injured, according to the country’s civil defense agency.
The fatalities were all recorded in the central Visayas region, particularly in the province of Cebu, where the quake caused significant damage to infrastructure, including power lines, bridges, and historic buildings such as a century-old church.
The earthquake, which occurred at 9:59 p.m. Philippines local time on September 30, 2025, had a shallow depth of 5 kilometers, making it more destructive.
Its epicenter was located 19 kilometers northeast of Bogo City in Cebu province. The tremor was felt across the central Visayas region and even in parts of Eastern Visayas and Luzon, according to news agencies.
In addition to the human toll, the earthquake has displaced over 20,000 people and damaged approximately 600 houses. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing, with authorities focusing on providing assistance to the affected communities.
The Philippines, situated on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” experiences more than 800 earthquakes annually. This recent earthquake is the deadliest in the country since a 7.2-magnitude quake hit the neighboring island of Bohol in 2013, killing 222 people.
As of now, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with aftershocks still occurring in the region. The focus remains on rescuing survivors, providing medical care, and assessing the full extent of the damage.
