‘Page of the past’ has been ‘closed once and for all’, says Iraq envoy

Iraq’s Ambassador to Kuwait, H.E. Al-Manhal Al-Safi, said the “page of the past” when the Iraqi citizens marched into Kuwait has been “closed once and for all.”

He explained that this step was the result of “genuine partnership and joint efforts,” guided by the directives of His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, and coordinated with First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousef Al-Sabah, along with other concerned authorities.

Speaking at a press conference, Al-Safi highlighted the unifying role of sports, particularly football, in bringing the two peoples closer together.

He recalled milestones such as the World Cup qualifiers last September, the Gulf Cup 25 in Basra, and the upcoming Gulf Cup 26 in Kuwait, which he said helped “foster mutual love and loyalty, change old stereotypes, and open a new chapter of relations.”

On bilateral issues, the ambassador noted that “both sides are serious about resolving the remaining files,” some of which have already been settled, while others are being addressed through diplomatic channels to strengthen cooperation and serve mutual interests.

Al-Safi also announced the appointment of Dr. Osama Al-Nashi as Iraq’s new ambassador to Kuwait, describing him as an experienced diplomat who has served in Vienna, Cairo, and Manchester, and most recently headed the Communications Department at Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He expressed confidence in Al-Nashi’s ability to further enhance bilateral ties.

On the economic front, the ambassador revealed steps to boost trade, including Iraq’s activation of the “transit system,” turning the country into a vital route for goods moving between Europe and the Gulf.

He said trial shipments had already passed through Europe, Turkey, and Iraq before reaching Kuwait’s Shuwaikh Port, paving the way for a new economic artery for the region. Discussions are also underway to allow Iraqi trucks to access Kuwaiti ports and vice versa.

He invited Kuwaiti and Gulf investors to explore opportunities in Iraq, particularly in housing, healthcare, transport, and infrastructure, noting that Iraq has updated labor and social security laws over the past two years to better protect capital and attract investments.

Al-Safi expressed gratitude to the Amir of Kuwait, the political leadership, and all who supported joint efforts, stressing that “cooperation will continue and doors will remain open for deeper partnerships in the interest of both nations.”

The ambassador also praised the Iraqi community in Kuwait, describing it as “integrated, law-abiding, and contributing to stability,” with no significant issues recorded against it. He further commended the role of Kuwaiti diwaniyas, calling them “open social platforms” that helped him engage directly with the people of Kuwait, strengthen positive perceptions of Iraq, and reinforce fraternal ties.
