One day, three cosmic wonders, August 12 set to dazzle skywatchers

The heavens are preparing for a spectacular show on August 12, as skywatchers around the world are treated to an extraordinary sequence of celestial events. Six planets will appear across the pre-dawn sky, a total solar eclipse will sweep across parts of the Northern Hemisphere, and the Perseid meteor shower will light up the night — all under the dark skies of a new moon.

The celestial show will begin before sunrise, when six planets — Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune — are expected to appear across the morning sky.

While all six planets will be part of the planetary display, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn should be the easiest to spot with the naked eye under suitable viewing conditions. Uranus will be more difficult to see and will likely require binoculars, while Neptune will require a telescope.

Planets perfectly aligh on Augusr 12

The spectacle will continue later in the day with a total solar eclipse crossing parts of Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain and Portugal. A partial eclipse will also be visible from large parts of Europe and sections of North America.

For skywatchers elsewhere, the evening will bring another major attraction as the Perseid meteor shower reaches its annual peak.

The Perseids are among the year’s most popular meteor showers and can produce dozens of meteors per hour from locations with dark, clear skies.

This year’s meteor viewing conditions are expected to be particularly favorable because the eclipse occurs around the time of a new moon, meaning there will be little moonlight to wash out the fainter meteors.

As night falls, observers away from city lights could therefore have an excellent opportunity to watch bright streaks from the Perseids crossing the sky.

Other spectacular celestial events lined up for August:

 August 9 – Moon and Mars Conjunction: The Moon will pass about 4.24 degrees north of Mars. The event can be observed from Kuwait City after the two objects appear in the sky at around 1:30am.

August 13 – Perseid Meteor Shower Peak: Kuwait’s skies will witness the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, which begins on July 17. The meteor display will be visible after 7:30pm, with meteors appearing to emerge from the eastern horizon.

August 15–16 – Venus and Moon Events: Venus will reach its greatest eastern elongation on August 15, making it clearly visible in the western sky after sunset. On August 16, the Moon will pass close to Venus in a conjunction visible from Kuwait City at around 6:42pm.

August 28 – Partial Lunar Eclipse: A partial lunar eclipse will be visible from Kuwait before dawn. The eclipse will begin at 4:23am, continue as the Moon moves closer to the horizon and end at around 5:28am, shortly after sunrise.

August 30–31 – Moon and Saturn Conjunction: The month will end with a Moon-Saturn conjunction, as the Moon passes about 7.2 degrees north of Saturn. The two celestial bodies will be visible in Kuwait’s evening sky and will reach their highest point at around 2:04 am.
