I am sure a lot of you do not know the benefits of iodized salt. Many people are using it because they only know it is healthier than the regular salt.
Personally I use it at home. It has the same taste as the regular salt but as I said before, it is much healthier.
Iodized salt is simply salt that has been fortified with the trace mineral Iodine.
Iodine can actually be found in food, mainly seafood but the amount we take in from food is not enough. Therefore, iodized salt should be used to help maintain a healthy balance of iodine in the body.
Why Iodine??
Iodine is essential for the thyroid to produce a couple of essential hormones called thyroxine and triodothyronine. These hormones help regulate the metabolism, as well as the growth and development of the body.
So a lack of Iodine means a slower metabolism and thyroid problems, which result in weight gain. Another benefit is that it removes harmful metals such as lead and mercury as well as other body harmful toxins and cleans our digestive system. So it helps restoring a healthy pH level needed for normal metabolic functions.
Iodized salt can also improve the functions of the brain, such as memory, concentration, performance and the ability to learn, especially for kids.
Unlike the normal salt, Iodized salt helps to regulate our heart rate and blood pressure. I will not say that it lowers blood pressure, it is salt at the end, but it is a better option for hypertensive people.
So, basically iodine is good for weight loss, for thyroid problems, for healthy pregnancies, for healthy brain functions, for heart health and for removal of toxins from the body.
I advise you to use it even if you are eating a healthy, balanced, varied diet, coz you are probably not getting enough of it on a daily basis. The list of foods rich in iodine include seaweed, cod, eggs, yogurt, milk, shrimp, macaroni, canned tuna, and dried prunes.
